Culture shock review: Dolemite is Dynamite

Dolemite is my name directed by Craig Brewer stars Eddie Murphy, Mike Epps, Kegan-Michael Key, and Craig Robinson. This movie sets around the career of actor and comedian Rudy Ray Moore. The film excellently depicts the life around Moore and his rise to fame. I will give my pros and cons then give my final score at the end.

Pros: The supporting cast
The cast for this film is so good and fitting. It reminds me of many classic ensemble comedies that Eddie Murphy has been in. Epps, Key, and Robinson are bright spots throughout the film. Wesley Snipes, also adds some unexpected comedy whenever he was in a scene.

Cons: The Beginning act
I felt like the beginning act was one of the low points of the movie. I just feel like I was put into the middle of the film. While watching I was wondering what year, who was the person, and why should I care? But luckily the film picks up after the first 25 minutes.

Pros: The Story
This story is amazing! Even though the movie was based on a true story, it was how the movie was presented. It was different than most bio-pics because it was a comedy. It started slow but from there the build to the end was amazing. Speaking of the ending, I believe that the ending was perfect. It showed how popular he truly was, im glad that they did not show how he fell from grace.

Pros: Eddie Murphy
MURPHY IS BACK! In his first, feature film since 2016’s Mr.Church, Murphy is fantastic as Rudy Ray Moore. He shows his complete range, funny, serious, and inspiring. Murphy is such a great character actor that I believe that he put his best performance since 1999’s life, which was also the last time he was in a rated R movie. I felt like Muphy got his funny back since his brother Charlie’s untimely death in 2017. I am excited to see what Murphy has to offer in the near future.

Overall: 9 out of 10
