Culture Shock Review: Doctor Sleep will keep you awake

Doctor Sleep by director Mike Flanagan is a wild interpretation of the great Stephen King novel. Doctor Sleep is a direct sequel to the 1980 thriller "The Shining". This film focuses on an older Danny Torrance the son of Jack Torrance from the first film. This movie is scary, emotional, and will keep you engaged. I will give my pros and cons then a score out of ten at the end.

Pro- The Pacing

This movie is a fantastic rollercoaster filled with ups and downs. The movie takes its establishing characters and explains why you should care about them. I love it when films take their time for important characters and moments, nothing felt rushed in this film.

Con- Rose the Hat

The main antagonist Rose was not the big scary bad guy I believed she should have been. She had the power of manipulation and can control everything that she wants. But she went out without a bang. She was outplayed and outsmarted too many times for me.

Con-The Shining

Doctor Sleep technically is the sequel to The Shining but at times it does not act like it at times. I want to know more about what happened after that fateful night. What happened to his mother? I had so many questions and I got none of them answered.

Pro- Doctor Sleep

Like I said earlier Doctor Sleep is a sequel but it does some many good things that it could be a standalone movie. The movie did not rely on heavy nostalgia which is wonderful. I cared about Danny and his story not his father's.

Pro-The Acting

Between Ewan McGregor (Danny), Rebecca Ferguson (Rose), and Kyliegh Curran (Abra)  put in wonderful performances. All three of these actors played off each other in some of the best scenes in the entire movie. Curran and McGregor stole the show. They made me care and believe that they should succeed. McGregor keeps his hot streak going with this performance.

Final Score 8.5/10
